Local SEO can feel overwhelming, but it really comes down to a handful of foundational steps. Get these right and you'll show up in more local searches. Skip them and you're leaving customers on the table no matter how good your service is.
Here's the checklist we run for every new client, in priority order.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is step zero. If you haven't claimed your GBP, do it today. Fill out every field — categories, services, hours, service area, photos, description. An incomplete profile ranks worse than a complete one, period.
2. Make sure your name, address, and phone are consistent everywhere
Search engines cross-reference your business info across dozens of directories. If your address is listed three different ways across the web, it hurts your ranking. Pick one exact format for your name, address, and phone number (NAP) and use it everywhere — your website, GBP, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, and every directory.
3. Build citations on major directories
Beyond Google, get listed on the directories that matter for your industry and area. The core ones: Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, and Yellow Pages. Industry-specific directories (like Healthgrades for medical or Angi for home services) carry extra weight. We optimize across 150 listing sites and directories for our clients.
4. Get a fast, mobile-friendly website
More than half of local searches happen on phones. If your site is slow or hard to read on mobile, visitors leave — and Google knows. A fast, mobile-first site with clear service pages and local SEO structure signals relevance and keeps visitors engaged.
5. Create location-specific content
If you serve multiple cities, create a page for each one. 'HVAC repair in [City]' pages help you rank for those specific searches. Include the city name naturally in headings and content, mention local landmarks or neighborhoods, and keep the content genuinely useful — not just keyword-stuffed.
6. Add structured data (schema markup)
Schema markup is code that tells search engines exactly what your business is — name, address, phone, services, hours, reviews. It doesn't change what visitors see, but it helps Google understand and display your info correctly. Every site we build includes LocalBusiness schema by default.
7. Build a steady review flow
Reviews are both a ranking factor and a conversion factor. Ask every happy customer for a review, and make it easy — a text link, a QR code, an automated email after service. Aim for a steady drip rather than occasional bursts. Review velocity (how recently your last review was) matters as much as your total count.
8. Post regularly to your Google Business Profile
GBP posts (offers, updates, photos) signal an active business. Google rewards profiles that post consistently. This is tedious to do manually, which is why we automate it — regular posts to GBP and social profiles without you lifting a finger.
9. Earn local backlinks
Links from other local websites — chambers of commerce, local news, community organizations, supplier directories — tell Google your business is established and trusted in your area. Sponsor a local event, join your chamber, or get featured in local media. These links carry real local ranking weight.
Run through this checklist honestly and you'll find gaps. Most local businesses have at least three or four items undone. Fix them and you'll see more visibility within a couple of months. That's the foundation our Capture, Rank & Grow, and Advertise plans are built on.
